Strategic Gas Emergency Reserve Site Location

Gas Networks Ireland selects Cahiracon, Co. Clare on the Shannon Estuary as the location for Ireland’s new Strategic Gas Emergency Reserve ("SGER").

The SGER will include a deep-water jetty for a floating storage regasification unit which allows for the storage of liquified natural gas at very low temperature and conversion to natural gas when needed.

The SGER will also have a new connection to the national gas network and the project is intended to increase the State’s energy and grid resilience as it will provide an emergency source of liquified natural gas in the event of a disruption to the State’s natural gas supply.
